One of the major purposes of the Conservation Committee is to protect our Lake Walloon and the surrounding environment of the Lakelands. This job cannot be accomplished without the cooperation of each and every member of the Lakelands Homeowners Community. Each one of us is responsible to help maintain the high quality and desirable environment that enticed us to buy into this very elite community. Below you will find information regarding issues that directly impact the lake and surrounding Lakelands area. We ask your full cooperation in these matters to help keep our lake and natural areas in their best natural condition for future years of enjoyment.

Reminders:

• We respectfully request all Lakeland members restrict the use of salt for de-icing private properties and use other non-salt means of de-icing. Road salt runoff enters our lake and alters the water environment if used in excessive amounts.

• We also respectfully request that only natural or low phosphorus fertilizers are used on lawns and gardens. The use of artificial fertilizers causes a proliferation of lake algae and plant growth that directly affects the lake environment. Not only does this impact the use of the lake but also requires the financial outlay of our dollars to inhibit lake weed growth for all of our enjoyment of lake activities and lake health.

• Please DO NOT RELEASE any bait, fish or live plants into our lake that have NOT been harvested or caught in Lake Walloon. There are many invasive species of bait, minnows, fish and plants that, if introduced into the lake may destroy the habitat and fish populations of natural lakes. The Conservation Committee has documentation to support these issues and members may request these resources be made available to them.

• Please do not transfer watercraft from other bodies of water into Lake Walloon without thoroughly cleaning and inspecting the craft and equipment. Zebra Mussels have been currently in the Chicago news for causing a form of botulism outbreak in the Great Lake waters that is killing water birds. It is very easy to unknowingly transfer invasive plants and mussels via watercraft.

• Please consider lower lighting in your lakeside yards when you are not using them. It encourages birds of many varieties to make nests and raise their young in the area. Lower wattage bulbs and the use timers to turn off the backyard outside lights after 11:00 p.m. can help in reducing “light pollution” and increase beneficial bird populations.
